Care Guide
Good care helps travel clothing keep its shape, color, comfort, and fit for longer. Always check the care label attached to the individual garment before washing, drying, ironing, steaming, or treating it. The garment’s care label takes priority over the general guidance below.
Before Washing
Before placing clothing in the wash:
- Check the care label
- Empty all pockets
- Close zippers, buttons, hooks, and fastenings
- Loosen drawstrings and removable belts
- Turn printed, dark, or delicate garments inside out
- Separate light, dark, and strongly colored items
- Separate delicate fabrics from towels, denim, and rough materials
- Place delicate garments in a laundry bag where appropriate
- Remove detachable accessories when the product instructions allow it
Wash new dark or brightly colored clothing separately for the first few washes, as some color transfer may occur.
General Washing Guidance
Unless the care label states otherwise:
- Use cold or cool water
- Select a gentle or normal wash cycle
- Use a mild detergent
- Avoid excessive detergent
- Do not use bleach
- Avoid fabric softener on performance or quick-drying fabrics
- Do not leave wet clothing sitting in the washing machine
- Remove garments promptly after the cycle ends
- Reshape clothing gently before drying
Cold or cool washing may help reduce fading, shrinkage, and unnecessary fabric wear.
Hand Washing
Hand washing may be suitable for delicate fabrics, lightweight garments, swimwear, and items with decorative details.
To hand wash:
- Fill a clean basin with cold or lukewarm water.
- Add a small amount of mild detergent.
- Gently move the garment through the water.
- Avoid aggressive rubbing, twisting, or scrubbing.
- Rinse thoroughly with clean water.
- Press out excess water gently.
- Do not wring the garment.
- Reshape and dry according to the care label.
Machine Washing
When machine washing:
- Use a laundry bag for delicate or lightweight clothing
- Turn garments inside out
- Avoid overloading the machine
- Wash similar colors together
- Keep clothing away from exposed hooks, sharp zippers, and rough hardware
- Select a lower spin speed for delicate fabrics
- Follow the care label’s recommended temperature
Clothing may become damaged when washed with heavy items such as towels, jeans, shoes, or bags.
Drying
Air drying is generally gentler on clothing than high-heat machine drying.
Unless the care label permits tumble drying:
- Hang or lay the garment flat to dry
- Dry in a well-ventilated area
- Keep strong colors away from prolonged direct sunlight
- Reshape the garment while damp
- Avoid placing wet clothing directly on heaters
- Do not store clothing until it is completely dry
High heat may cause:
- Shrinkage
- Fabric weakening
- Color fading
- Elastic damage
- Print cracking
- Changes in fit
- Damage to fastenings or decorative details
When tumble drying is allowed, use the lowest suitable heat setting and remove clothing promptly.
Ironing and Steaming
Check the care label before applying heat.
When ironing:
- Begin with the lowest suitable temperature
- Iron the garment inside out where appropriate
- Use a pressing cloth for delicate fabrics, prints, or decorative details
- Keep the iron away from elastic, coatings, logos, and heat-sensitive trims
- Do not leave the iron in one place for too long
When steaming:
- Keep the steamer a safe distance from the fabric
- Test a small, hidden area first
- Avoid over-steaming delicate, coated, or stretch fabrics
- Allow the garment to dry before wearing or packing
Some fabrics should not be ironed or steamed. Follow the individual care label.
Removing Travel Creases
Temporary creases may occur when clothing is folded or compressed inside packaging or luggage.
To reduce creasing:
- Hang the garment after unpacking
- Smooth the fabric gently by hand
- Hang it in a ventilated room
- Use a steamer only when permitted
- Iron at the recommended temperature
- Place the garment in a steamy bathroom for a short period, away from direct water
Do not apply high heat without checking the care label.
Treating Stains
Treat stains as soon as reasonably possible.
General steps:
- Blot excess liquid gently.
- Do not rub the stain aggressively.
- Rinse with cold water where appropriate.
- Apply a small amount of mild stain treatment.
- Test the treatment on a hidden area first.
- Wash according to the care label.
- Confirm the stain is gone before applying heat.
Heat may set some stains permanently.
Avoid using bleach, harsh solvents, or strong stain removers unless the care label specifically permits them.
Care by Fabric Type
Cotton
Cotton is comfortable and breathable but may shrink or wrinkle when exposed to high heat.
Recommended care:
- Wash in cold or cool water
- Wash similar colors together
- Use mild detergent
- Air dry where possible
- Use low or medium heat only when permitted
- Reshape while damp
- Iron according to the care label
Linen and Linen Blends
Linen naturally develops wrinkles and may soften with use and washing.
Recommended care:
- Use cold or lukewarm water
- Select a gentle cycle
- Avoid bleach
- Do not overload the washing machine
- Remove promptly after washing
- Air dry or use low heat when permitted
- Iron or steam while slightly damp if the care label allows
Natural creasing is part of linen’s appearance and is not normally considered a defect.
Polyester and Polyester Blends
Polyester is generally easy to care for but can be affected by excessive heat.
Recommended care:
- Wash in cold or cool water
- Use a gentle or normal cycle
- Avoid high-temperature washing
- Air dry or tumble dry on low heat when permitted
- Use a low ironing temperature
- Avoid applying direct heat to prints or coatings
Nylon
Nylon is lightweight and may dry quickly, but high heat can damage the fibers.
Recommended care:
- Wash in cold water
- Use mild detergent
- Select a gentle cycle
- Avoid bleach
- Air dry away from strong heat
- Do not use a hot iron
- Avoid rough surfaces that may cause snagging
Viscose and Rayon
Viscose and rayon may become more delicate when wet and may shrink or lose shape if handled incorrectly.
Recommended care:
- Follow the care label closely
- Hand wash or use a delicate cycle when permitted
- Use cold water
- Avoid twisting or wringing
- Reshape gently while damp
- Lay flat or hang carefully to dry
- Use low heat when ironing, if permitted
Spandex and Stretch Blends
Elastic fibers can be damaged by heat, bleach, and harsh chemicals.
Recommended care:
- Wash in cold water
- Use mild detergent
- Avoid bleach
- Avoid fabric softener where possible
- Air dry
- Do not use high dryer heat
- Do not iron elastic areas directly
Wool and Wool Blends
Wool requires gentle handling and may shrink or felt when exposed to heat or agitation.
Recommended care:
- Follow the care label
- Use a wool or delicate cycle only when permitted
- Use cold water and wool-safe detergent
- Avoid twisting or wringing
- Reshape and lay flat to dry
- Store only when completely dry
Some wool garments may require professional cleaning.
Swimwear Care
Where applicable, rinse swimwear in cool fresh water as soon as possible after exposure to:
- Salt water
- Chlorine
- Sunscreen
- Body oils
- Sand
To care for swimwear:
- Hand wash gently
- Use mild detergent
- Do not wring
- Air dry in the shade
- Do not tumble dry
- Keep away from rough pool edges and textured surfaces
- Avoid storing wet swimwear in a closed bag for long periods
Chlorine, salt, sunscreen, heat, and rough surfaces may gradually affect color, stretch, and fabric condition.
Printed and Patterned Clothing
To help protect prints and surface details:
- Turn the garment inside out before washing
- Use cold water
- Select a gentle cycle
- Avoid bleach
- Avoid high dryer heat
- Do not iron directly over prints
- Use a pressing cloth where appropriate
- Avoid rubbing the printed area against rough surfaces
Minor differences in print placement may occur between individual garments.
Dark and Bright Colors
To help reduce fading or color transfer:
- Wash separately for the first few washes
- Use cold water
- Turn the garment inside out
- Use detergent suitable for colored clothing
- Avoid soaking for long periods
- Keep away from prolonged direct sunlight while drying
- Remove promptly from the washing machine
Color transfer caused by washing strongly colored garments with lighter clothing is not considered a product defect.
Clothing With Zippers, Buttons, and Drawstrings
Before washing:
- Close zippers
- Fasten buttons and hooks where appropriate
- Secure loose straps
- Loosen drawstrings
- Remove detachable belts or accessories when permitted
- Place delicate hardware inside a laundry bag
Do not pull zippers or fastenings forcefully. Stop using the item if a fastening becomes caught and inspect it before applying further pressure.
Care While Traveling
To keep clothing in better condition while traveling:
- Pack only completely dry garments
- Separate clean and worn clothing
- Use breathable packing bags
- Avoid sealing damp clothing in plastic for long periods
- Fold delicate items around sharp bag hardware
- Keep cosmetics and liquids in sealed containers
- Store jewelry separately from delicate fabrics
- Unpack clothing soon after arrival
- Hang items to release temporary creases
- Rinse salt water, chlorine, or sunscreen from suitable garments promptly
Packing Tips
For shirts, dresses, and lightweight trousers:
- Fasten buttons and zippers
- Smooth the garment before folding
- Fold along natural seams
- Avoid overfilling luggage
- Place heavier items below delicate clothing
- Use tissue paper or a lightweight garment bag for crease-prone items
Rolling may work well for some casual fabrics, but structured or delicate garments may be better folded.
Storage
Before long-term storage:
- Wash or clean the garment
- Make sure it is completely dry
- Remove items from pockets
- Close fastenings
- Fold or hang according to the fabric and shape
- Store in a cool, dry, ventilated location
- Keep away from direct sunlight and heat
- Avoid prolonged compression
- Avoid storing clothing in damp plastic bags
Heavy knitwear and stretch garments may lose shape when hung for long periods and may be better stored folded.
Normal Changes Over Time
Regular wearing and washing may gradually cause:
- Fabric softening
- Light fading
- Minor pilling
- Natural wrinkling
- Slight stretching
- Wear in high-contact areas
- Changes in fabric texture
- Gradual loss of elasticity
These changes are part of normal use and do not automatically indicate a product defect.
